Charity Info:
We’re hoping to raise money to get our daughter a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) to make her more comfortable and so that we can do more things together as a family. Maddie doesn’t travel lightly – she has a lot of equipment which goes everywhere with her – monitoring, oxygen, suction etc. She is also too big now for a child’s car seat, but as she cannot hold her head or body by herself, she cannot sit in a normal seat. So we need a WAV to wheel her into and out of a car in comfort, and so that our whole family can fit in one car and do things together. Maddie is 13 years old and has a condition called Malignant Migrating Partial Seizures of Infancy, Her condition is incredibly rare – there are less than 150 kids in the world with MMPSI, and she is the only one with her particular gene mutation, meaning she’s very special indeed. Maddie started having seizures at just a few days old, and by 18 days of age was having close to 100 seizures a day. As a result of this Maddie has severe brain damage – despite being 13 years of age, she is more like a 4-6 week old baby, and it entirely dependent on us for everything. She is fed through a tube and requires supplemental oxygen all day. At night she has a non-invasive ventilation machine to help her breath. She has her oxygen levels and heart rate monitored constantly. She has no purposeful movement and cannot walk, talk, hold her head or communicate. She is in hospital several times a year, usually away from home in Bristol or Southampton Intensive Care for several weeks at a time. We were told not to expect her to live past the age of 2 – but she is now one of the eldest children in the world with her condition. But despite all of this, she is a happy, content, warrior princess and we couldn’t be prouder of her.
